The French ski resort of La Rosière sits at an impressive base-altitude of 1850m — across the valleys from les Arcs and la Plagne — with pistes running up to over 2,600m. Developed in the 1950s, the resort boasts generally peaceful pistes, decent lift-links and excellent family facilities. La Rosière works superbly well for groups wanting a broad range of pistes for beginners and intermediates, and of course high altitude.

This is an excellent resort for beginners and families, with some of the finest nursery and learner pistes in the Alps. Up above the resort, the gentle slopes are non-threatening and geared towards beginners and improvers. Higher up, a good range of steeper runs complements them perfectly.

The Espace San Bernando is a sizeable ski area and advanced skiers have a broad range of terrain to explore, and access over to la Thuile in Italy on the same lift pass provides further scope for exploration. That said, mile-hungry skiers keen to hit the slopes hard would perhaps enjoy ski areas such as the Espace Killy or the Three Valleys more.

La Rosière is an outstanding resort choice for families taking their children to the mountains. The nursery slope is free to use and it’s located within easy reach of the town. The resort also boasts a good range of chalets offering in-house nursery facilities as well as a good range of other childcare facilities, and the ski schools there are very widely reputed.

For freestyle skiers in search of kickers and rails, la Rosière is home to a fine snow-park. The Snowpark de la Poletta has been carefully designed to offer routes suited to all levels; from beginner to expert. It sits beneath the Poletta drag lift, with an impressive range of rails, hips, jumps, handrails and tables to play on. As for freeride skiing, La Rosière is a great place to be in fresh powder. Thanks to the high altitude and quiet pistes, la Rosière holds fresh snowfall better than almost any other French resort and you can make fresh tracks through light snow a long time after the last snow fall. Heli-skiing is also possible here as the Italian border is so close by.

La Rosière is not a particularly large resort but despite that, the range of accommodation options is strong. A broad range of tour operators and independent chalet companies offer chalets in many great locations for easy ski and town access, and visitors can also choose from a decent selection of hotels. It’s also a popular choice for independent travellers, because of its proximity to Bourg St Maurice for the snow train. The resort is dominated by mid-range chalets though, and there are very few 5* luxury properties to speak of.

To access the resort of La Rosière, visitors have a number of options to choose from. The airports of Chambery, Geneva and Grenoble are all within approximately 2 to 2.5 hours away by road. Visitors can take the train into Bourg St Maurice too, with the transfer onward taking around 40 minutes. In the resort itself, a free bus circulates offering easy access to the various different districts.
La Rosière is a generally pretty peaceful and quiet resort, and the nightlife is minimal compared to many other French ski destinations. That said, there are a few good bars to hit if you’re in search of a little light après ski.

Bars such as Le Petit Danois, Le Pub and le McKinley’s offer pool tables, live music and happy hours, injecting a little nightlife atmosphere into an otherwise relaxed and peaceful ski resort.
La Rosière offers an excellent selection of non-ski activities, suitable for everyone for families with kids to adrenaline-hungry thrill-seekers. If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained away from the slopes, there’s a good range of options including bowling, cinema, dog sledding and sledging. For more adventurous thrill-seekers, pursuits including heli-skiing, parapente, snow-kiting and snow-shoeing can all be enjoyed in La Rosière.

La Rosière is home to a great range of catered chalets, with breakfast, afternoon tea and 3- or 4-course dinners with wine included. But of course, the vast majority of visitors in catered chalets will still dine out at least once during their week-long visit. For that, the resort offers some lovely restaurants offering tasty pizza and pasta dishes alongside those Savoyard staples we know and love.

There’s an enormous range of well-located catered ski chalets in la Rosière with UK flights, airport transfers, half-board dining, accommodation and childcare wrapped up into one handy package. Parents can opt into full-day care, supervised lunches, ski lessons, cocoa clubs and a whole host of other exciting activities for the kids.

For something a little less involved, les Galopins is a French-run childcare service in the resort which accepts youngsters from 18 months to 13 years of age. Half-day or full-day options are available, plus lunch. Les Galopins is located in the heart of the resort, with a specially designed private garden for outdoor play.
